Teen Programs Baton Rouge

It can be hard to figure out your place in the world. As a young person with your whole life ahead of you, having the right guidance and support can make a real difference in figuring out who you are and what you can achieve. Whether kids come to the Y looking to explore their interest, or for support in navigating challenges, the Y is committed to nurturing children and teens and roots for their success

YMCA Youth and Government:

YMCA Youth in Government is a national program of the Y that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized, model-government programs. The YMCA Louisiana Youth & Government program is organized for high school students throughout the State of Louisiana. Since 1962, the YMCA Louisiana Youth & Government program has offered the Youth Legislature conference to the future leaders. At Youth Legislature, students attend the three-day conference as Senators, House Representatives, lobbyists, officials, members of the judicial system, or press representatives. Throughout their stay in Baton Rouge, the 550-plus students assume specific roles and act out mock legislation or mock trial.

In 1987, the Model United Nations conference was added to the Youth & Government program and in 2003, the first YMCA Middle School United Nations Assembly was held.

Youth Legislature and Model United Nations include formal debates, committee meetings, reports on the fate of bills and proposals and election of new officers. Social activities include banquets and dances.

YMCA Achievers:

The YMCA Achievers program is a mentoring program for junior high and high school. They are mentored by local professionals and attend career cluster meetings, where they are guided in setting career and personal goals.

Dr. Leo Marsh started the first Achievers program in 1971 at the Harlem YMCA in New York. It has long since advanced throughout the nation to places like Cincinnati, Detroit, Lexington, Louisville, Milwaukee, Newark, New Orleans and across the country.

The Youth Achievers programs meet weekly or bi-weekly throughout the year at local YMCAs, high schools or college campuses all over the country. Through academic aid, career exploration and mentoring, this program helps youth to raise their academic standards, develop a positive sense of self, build character, explore diverse college and career options, and learn from role models who inspire them to greater heights.

YMCA Christian Values Conference:

For one week each summer, teens from across the United States come together at YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina to explore their personal values, share in spiritual fellowship, and develop new friendships. The YMCA Christian Values Conference provides an opportunity for young people to gain deeper insight into themselves while having non-stop fun during all the outrageous games, carnivals, song and special events. Join us on the mountain this summer for a week of unforgettable memories!

Every morning and evening there are inspiring devotions to enrich delegates' experience. The natural setting in the Blue Ridge mountains is an ideal place for teens to come and temporarily escape from their busy worlds to spend time in reflection.

Lots of exciting activities are built into the busy schedule. One day in the week there is some free time: hiking the mountain, Frisbee, gym sports, swimming, arts and crafts, or just relaxing on the famous green rocking chairs are options.
